  • Do what you can't - Samsung's advertising campaign

Growing up, did you ever think you’d be able to run with dinosaurs? Or pay for your shopping with your watch? Samsung technology is opening up a world of possibilities and bringing them to people’s everyday lives. What seemed impossible for previous generations has become the new normal.  (From Samsung Website)

This quote seems to be a way of selling more products. There doesn't seem to be much of a meaning.

  • One day you'll leave this world behind, so live a life you will remember - The Nights, Avicii

This quote is a lyric from Avicii's song which is about having fun and living a life you and others will remember.

"Everyone has to die. So live a life that people will surely remember you for. These are the nights that never die means that the hard work you put into making a legacy for yourself and achieving your goals doesn't go in vain, it comes from the saying "burn the midnight oil"." (A user from lyricsmode.com)

I really like this quote as I want to live a great life and do as much exciting things as I can. It also is very meaningful as Avicii is one of my favourite artists, however died in 2018.

AVICII

Tim Bergling, known professionally as Avicii, was a Swedish DJ, electronic musician, and songwriter who specialised in audio programming, remixing and record producing. At the age of 16, Bergling began posting his remixes on electronic music forums, which led to his first record deal.

Bergling retired from touring in 2016 due to health problems, having suffered stress and poor mental health for several years. On 20 April 2018, Bergling committed suicide in Muscat, Oman. He was buried on 8 June in his hometown of Stockholm. His posthumous third album titled Tim was released in 2019.

The Nights

Furlong noted that he began writing the song as an ode to his father. The inspiration for the “pirate-y fight song” sound came to him while at a bar in Ireland. Furlong recalled:

"I had been going back and forth with Jordan and Gabe about this song idea that merged commercially sound rock music with the signature sound of an Irish drinking song. When I returned to Los Angeles we all went into the studio."

Furlong sent the original idea, titled "My Father Told Me", to Arash Pournouri, Avicii's manager. Pournouri recognised an immediate draw to the track, saying that the song had that same sense of euphoria which characterises so much of Avicii's music. In an interview with Yahoo! Music, Pournouri said: "It made absolute sense to work on it with Nick... Avicii and I just needed to make it more 'us' and that's what [e did."

Like his previous hits "Wake Me Up" and "Hey Brother", "The Nights" is a progressive house song containing elements of folk rock. It is written in the key of F# and has 126 BPM.

"One day you'll leave this world behind, so live a life you will remember"

On 1 December 2014, a lyric video to accompany the release of "The Nights" was released on YouTube.

On 15 December 2014, the official music video for "The Nights" was released on YouTube and premiered on the front page of Yahoo Music. The video was produced, directed by, and stars "professional life liver" Rory Kramer, who filmed an exuberant action-packed recollection of his own life on roller coasters, surfing, snowboarding, skateboarding, balloon flying, making a four door convertible out of a Toyota, etc. – living a life to be remembered.

"The Nights" is a song by Swedish DJ and record producer Avicii. It features uncredited vocals by singer/songwriter Nicholas Furlong. The song peaked at number six on the UK Singles Chart and number one on the UK Dance Chart.

This script font fits with the second part of the quote "live a life you will remember" as the italics make it seem like an exciting font. The quote basically says you only live once so make the most of your life which involves doing exciting things.

A sans serif font would work as Avicii was young, modern and his music was electronic which also represents those characteristics. However, I feel the quote would look better in a script font.

I think this font would work with a memorial poster for Avicii as the script fits with the living life theme and the fade effect it has works with how he is no longer alive as its like its fading away. I think this font would work with the first part of the quote "one day you'll leave this world behind" as it resembles fading away like the font is.

Evaluation

I have done what the brief asked as I created an A-Z typeface that relates to my quote. I also created not one, not two, but 3 posters that feature my quote. Research I looked into was mainly Avicii, where I looked into his style and the song's meaning. I also looked into the types of fonts and meanings behind them such as Serif and Sans-Serif fonts. I probably should have looked into other designers work that relate to quotes and typefaces, which was something I didn't do. My strengths in this project were having done a similar project at College, however this project was bigger and had more to do such as make a whole A-Z typeface, and posters. Other strengths involved already knowing about the different types of fonts as well as having Photoshop & Illustrator skills. My weaknesses were coming up with a quote, as I don't really look at quotes much, it took me a little while to find this quote that really is actually a lyric, however a lot of people see it as a quote because it means a lot.

I used Illustrator to design my typeface, and Photoshop to make my posters. I printed my posters on normal paper in A4 as that is the only option on my printer. My work changed when I was deciding which illustration went in which letter as sometimes I would find an idea and then realise it would've looked better in a different letter so I would change it around. I think my project was successful as I created three posters that I like, one of which has a different meaning to the other two, and my typeface is very interesting and clear to what letter it is. In the future I could improve by making more posters that fit with the airport style idea, to make a selection of posters that all feature a wonder of the world.
