The Brief - The Right Kind of Wrong

This project is designed to encourage experimentation and play with media as an aesthetic direction for a work. As a starting point we would like you to use research and recording to identify an object, behaviour or observation that is interesting to you whilst having potential in an altered state. You will then use your studio days to affect this material through analogue and digital workshops using experimental techniques. You will be searching for errors and glitches that lend aesthetic or communicative potential in the first week, before settling on a final work to refine in the second week. The project may take the form of a collage, photograph, gif, film, animation, sound work, typography or something completely analogue. You will conclude this project by giving a presentation of your blog to your tutors and peers in a project review that demonstrates how you have linked your creative process to produce a specific outcome.

Photoshop

Induction

This is my quality "artwork" created in our Photoshop Induction. I used features such as the Magnetic Lasso tool, Mask, adjustment layers and layers. I added lots of memes and tried to make it humorous.

Ideas / Interests

Ideas & Interests

Augmented

Reality

Augmented Reality is a way of showing something in real life through your phone screen and camera. AR game examples include Pokemon Go, Minecraft Earth, Harry Potter Wizards Unite and Jurassic World Alive. My idea to do with this is having a picture of someone holding a phone and being a real life person on the phone screen, but not in real life. This could relate to technology in the future or how its gone too far.

Alton Towers Archive

The Alton Towers Archive features lots of pictures of the history of Alton Towers Resort. I could use these pictures to make a collage of the Alton Towers History. Theme Parks is something that I'm very interested in.

Analogue Experiments

These are my Analogue Experiments that I created with the theme of AR. I made a collage about existing AR games such as Pokemon Go, as well as 3D models of a phone playing it. I found this day quite hard to come up with Analogue ideas for a digital idea, as AR is all on phones.

Premiere Pro

Induction

This is my quality "film" created in our Premiere Pro Induction. I used features such as cropping clips, adding sound, effects, overlaying videos and text. Like the Photoshop induction, I made it as memey and funny as possible.

AR Game Themes

  • Fixing the world (encounter wrong broken things in the world)

  • Movies (Find movie and TV characters around the world)

Thomas Dagg

Project Launch & Photoshop

30th September 2019

Thomas Dagg is a Graphic Designer who has worked for brands such as Adidas, Volvo, BMW and Tangerine. He has created work themed to Star Wars in real life by overlaying star wars objects into real life pictures. Some of these additions are very subtle such as a few spaceships in the sky, or a little detail on a bus. His work inspires mine as it is similar to Augmented Reality as you see something that isn't real, and my work will be making things look different to what they actually are in real life.

Digital Experiments

These are my digital experiments that, relate to Augmented Reality. The Colosseum picture is the idea I want to develop further as I have came up with a good idea that I like.

Week 2

My Idea

The idea I want to take further is a new Augmented Reality game that is about travelling around the world to landmarks and buildings, and fixing them up as they have been destroyed (I don't know the cause of this yet). The example of this is the Colosseum, which I destroyed in Photoshop. The player will need to fix up the structure by tapping or some other way, to get points for their account.

Fix the World logo.png

Play Store

I took a screenshot of the Google Play Store on my phone and then changed it in Photoshop to make my game look real on it. I made the app an icon which features the logo on a green background and changed the screenshots to my own pictures that I made for the game. Other text-related things I changed were the Title, Developer subtitle, and the age rating to match Pokemon Go.

I think this project was a success as I like my idea and what I have created, as it features new technology and a good meaning. The only concern I have is whether it fits the brief theme of "The right kind of Wrong". I think it does as the point of the game is that you have to fix the wrong versions (destroyed) of buildings.

Strengths in this project were having knowledge in my chosen idea about Augmented Reality and Technology. Also, like the Design project, having a good knowledge of how to use the Adobe Creative Cloud Apps, as this is what my project was made in.

Weaknesses in this project were being able to think of an idea that matched the brief theme as I found it quite hard to understand the meaning of it. I found the brief to be very different to the Design Project and other Graphic Design projects I have undertaken.

New techniques I tried in this project included, photography as I took photos of the AUB campus to base my project on. I found this a pretty easy thing to do as I just used my phone's camera and walked around campus taking photos of the main places.

If i had more time or did the project again, I would improve on my destruction, as I feel there are better and more realistic ways of making buildings look destroyed. I would've also looked into how to make it into a working demo game to see how people would play it and what it would be like.

Final Outcome

Presentation

Fix the World is a new Augmented Reality game where players walk around and find destroyed landmarks, which they then fix. The game is similar to other AR games such as Pokemon Go and Harry Potter: Wizards Unite where you have a map which tracks your location.
